Two parents have been seriously injured after they and their three children were hit by a car in Battle yesterday afternoon (Sunday, 19).
Emergency services were called to Upper Lake around 1.55pm, where a black Volkswagen Beetle had hit the family, before crashing into the front window of a cafe, leaving customers trapped inside.
The mother suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, while the father had serious head injuries.
All three of the children, including an infant in a pram, were in shock and were treated for minor injuries at Conquest Hospital in St Leonards.
The woman driver of the car was also treated for minor injuries.
Sergeant Dan Pitcher, of the Sussex and Surrey road policing team, said:
“The road was closed for several hours while this incident was dealt with and thanks are due to other motorists for their patience and understanding.
“We are now keen to talk to anyone who may have seen what happened or noticed the black VW being driven shortly beforehand.”
Police are investigating reports that the car driver may have been under the influence of alcohol when it happened.
Blood samples were taken when she attended hospital and these have now been sent for analysis.
