Eastbourne’s Arndale Centre is set to get a new name and new look as part of an £85 million extension opening next year.

The extension will include 22 new retail units, seven restaurants and an eight-screen cinema, while the centre will be renamed ‘The Beacon’.

Owners Legal and General said the extension is scheduled to open in the run-up to Christmas 2018, when the new branding will be revealed.

The new branding will replace the Arndale Centre signs

The new name was agreed after a series of discussions, consultations and focus group meetings, according to the firm.

Andrew Rice, fund manager for Legal and General, said:

“It’s never easy to find a new name for a shopping centre with a 37-year history in the town.

“But after discussions and explorations, including meetings with key opinion formers in Eastbourne, we agreed unanimously that The Beacon was a great new name.”

The owners added the centre will act as ‘a beacon to shoppers around the region’, and said the name reminds them of ‘our coastal history and the landmark Beachy Head Lighthouse’.
