A fish and chip restaurant in Worthing has been named as one of the best in the country.

The Fish Factory in Brighton Road is among 20 eateries, from across the UK, on the shortlist for the Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year award.

The restaurant is the only one in Sussex in the running for the prize.

The accolade will be awarded at the 2018 National Fish And Chip Awards next January.

Event organisers Seafish said the shortlisted restaurants were judged on a wide range of criteria to reach this stage of the competition.

These qualifiers include menu development and innovation, responsible sourcing policies, staff training and promotional and marketing activities.

Seafish’s mission is to support  a profitable, sustainable and socially responsible future for the seafood industry.

Judges from Seafish are making unannounced visits to all 20 of the restaurants over the coming weeks.

A final shortlist of five restaurants for the award will then be produced.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel on January 25 next year.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive of Seafish, said:

“With the popularity of fast casual dining on the increase, the fish and chip restaurant experience has now come up to par with the traditional fish and chip takeaway, and we are seeing a whole host of innovative and forward thinking outlets come to the fore.

“The rigorous judging process behind this award ensures that not only the quality of the fish and chips being plated up is of the highest standard, but that the restaurants are offering customer dining experiences that are second to none.

“The top 20 restaurants should be extremely proud of their achievements and I congratulate them all.”
