A 70-year-old woman from Horsham has died after her car collided with a stolen vehicle on the A24 near the town yesterday afternoon (Friday, 10).

The woman died at the scene following the incident involving her Ford Fiesta and a black Mercedes AMG estate on the Fathings Hill roundabout shortly after 2.30pm.

A 70-year-old passenger in the Fiesta, a female friend of the driver also from Horsham, had minor injuries.

Police are currently attempting to trace the driver of the stolen vehicle, who reportedly fled from the scene.

Detective Inspector Will Rolls said:

“This is a tragic incident involving two innocent members of the public.

“We offer our heartfelt sympathies to their families and specially trained officers are providing support.”

Police said the stolen car is believed to have been taken following a burglary in Goring earlier that day.

Officers had traced it to the Buck Barn Crossroads, where it was seen to leave the services in convoy with a Mercedes A Class, also stolen.

The A Class had then crashed into a hedge near the services after failing to stop for officers, while the AMG had been involved in the collision minutes later.

An 18-year-old man from Feltham has been charged in connection with the incident.

Isaac Mcfayden, a student of Hounslow Road, is charged with two counts of burglary, dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and receiving stolen goods.

Police are appealing for witnesses, and said they believe the AMG driver tried to flag down a lift after leaving the crash scene.

Anyone with information is asked to report it online here, or call 101 quoting Operation Mantra with reference number 684 of 10/11.

Police said watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been notified because of earlier contact with police.
