A Sainsbury’s supermarket and car park in Haywards Heath was evacuated yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 30) following reports of a ‘suspicious item’.

Police were called around 2.45pm to the store in Bannister Way.

Officers said an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called, and the object was destroyed as a precaution.

However, police said it was later confirmed to be a pressure testing device left behind by an engineer who had been working in the store earlier that day.

The incident was closed around 5.20pm.
