Thousands of pounds in cash have been stolen from an ATM machine at a Tesco Express store in Eastbourne this morning (Thursday, 21), following a robbery which resulted in a staff member being taken to hospital.

A group of three men armed with iron bars went into the store in Freshwater Square around 7.45am, and forced the staff member to the floor.

They demanded he hand over the money from the machine, and he was left with injuries to his arm and face.

The suspects, who had their faces covered, then made off in two vehicles, a BMW and a Range Rover.

Police said the BMW was found abandoned in Hamlands Lane in the town.

The other vehicle made off northbound towards Gatwick and has since been located in Sutton, according to officers.

Detective Sergeant Ross Bartlett:

“This is a fast moving investigation and enquiries are ongoing, but we are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the vehicles in the area before the robbery and then the BMW being abandoned.

“This was a frightening ordeal for the staff in the shop, one of who was injured.”
