An investigation is taking place this morning (Thursday, 1) following a fire at Amberley Castle overnight.

West Sussex County Council said four crews were sent to the hotel shortly after 12.30am where they found the fire in a room, which then spread to the roof space above it.

Guests were evacuated to the village hall and looked after by the fire service and hotel staff.

The council said the fire was extinguished and a salvage operation took place to protect the historic property.

No-one has been reported injured.

John Badley, regional general manager of the hotel said:

“All of our guests and staff were safely evacuated and accounted for, with no injuries reported.

“We are most grateful for the prompt actions of both the fire service and our hotel colleagues who aided the safe evacuation of all guests.”

Fire crews remained at the hotel overnight.
