A potentially life-saving video has been launched by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, to show students-by-the-sea why alcohol and water do not mix.

This Freshers Week, the emergency service has released a video on water safety and it shows just how easily drowning incidents can occur on a night out with friends.

A man was rescued alive from Sussex’s River Ouse after a 999 call sparked a major, multi-agency rescue.

He survived because a police helicopter located a faint heat source 90 minutes after he fell into the water.

See his story in the film here, as it weaves together his family’s reaction and the events of the evening from the perspective of the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

The service says 89% of men who died after going missing on a night out were found dead in the water and 2016 saw over 600 water related fatalities in the UK.
