A lady in Hassocks will become a centenarian on the centenary of Armistice Day on Sunday, November 11.
Dilys Armistice Fox was born on the eleventh of November 1918.
The same day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918.
Dilys from Bargoed, near Caerphilly, Wales, moved to Forest Hill when she was sixteen to become a children’s nanny.
Now, she lives at Villa Adastra, in Hassocks, a Salvation Army care home for people over 65.
The care home where Dilys lives put out a social media post, inviting people to send her in a birthday card.
Sharon Bacon, Head of Care at Villa Adastra told us that they have already received over 100 cards.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with offers of flowers, entertainment, all kinds of things from the local community.”
Staff at the home have had to make Dilys her very own post box, because so many cards are coming in.
Sharon explained why they wanted to celebrate the milestone birthday, she said:
“Dilys only has one relative who is very elderly and lives in Wales, so we are the closest thing to her of family.
“We just thought it would be nice to mark the occasion and make her realise there’s still community out there who care.”
Sharon and her team has organised a week full of celebrations for Dilys’ birthday, including visits from local children and groups.
Local MP, Nick Herbert will also be calling in tomorrow (Wednesday, 7) to meet and greet Dilys.
On Sunday, November 11, Sarah’s told us that Hassocks village parade will make a stop to the care home to sing Dilys happy birthday.
The Burgess Hill marching band is also going to play for her.
“This just goes to prove community spirit has not been lost and everybody has been absolutely fantastic.
“I would just like to say thank you from everyone at Villa Adastra and especially from Dilys.”
When asked about all of the birthday attention, Dilys said:
“I’m amazed, I don’t know what to say, it’s come as a big surprise, I really am grateful.”
