Emergency services were called to Kings Road, Brighton seafront yesterday evening to extinguish a fire burning off gas from a manhole - part of the road was closed Eastbound this morning.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue reported being at the scene at around 6pm and not leaving until 1am after the fire was eventually extinguished.
Two fire engines attended the incident.
UK Power Networks were called in order to isolate utilities and it was treated as an electrical fire, with no sign of damage to surrounding buildings or properties.
A 30-metre cordon was put around the scene with people and traffic asked to avoid the area while they dealt with the incident.

Power was restored early yesterday evening, although the cordon remained in place while emergency services investigated.
ESFRS tweeted that they had left the scene at 1am this morning.
The England rugby team, who had been staying at The Grand hotel, were evacuated and moved to alternative accommodation.
