A car smashed into the second floor of a California dental office after hitting a central reservation and going airborne.

Photographs showed the Nissan Altima wedged into the top floor of the building, the front half inside while the back hung about three metres above the pavement.

Its driver and passenger escaped serious injury, officials said.

A small fire injured one person who managed to get out of the car without help, but fire crews had to rescue the second person.

An investigation is seeking to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
