A man who swam across the River Ouse in Lewes following an eight vehicle crash on the A27 yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 7) has been arrested.

Police said three men ran from a Mercedes which had crashed near the Southerham roundabout shortly after 4pm following a police pursuit.

According to officers, one had managed to swim across the river, but was picked up by police as he emerged on the opposite bank.

He was taken to hospital under arrest, along with another of the car’s occupants, who had suffered an arm injury following the incident.

The driver of another vehicle involved in the crash was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with a suspected broken collarbone.

A number of vehicles have also been damaged.

Sergeant Stacey Ellott said:

“We are aware that this caused considerable disruption and we worked as swiftly as possible to reopen the road, but this did take some time and we thank people for their patience.”

The eastbound carriageway was reopened around 10.30pm.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to report it online here, or call 101 quoting Operation Raydon.
