Two cases of suspected arson in Hunston may be linked, according to police, but officers are ‘keeping an open mind’.
On Friday, January, 4), a barn fire was spotted shortly after 11am at Reedbridge Farm, Hunston, near Chichester.
The barn, which contained more than 200 bales of straw, was destroyed.
Police said numerous people nearby noticed black smoke and popping noises coming from the fire.
They were advised to keep windows and doors shut while the West Sussex Fire and Rescue service put out the flames.
Days later, shortly before 2am yesterday (Tuesday, 8), fire crews were called to Hunters Lodge riding centre in Hunston.
Another fire destroyed four empty stables, hay bales, tools and storage containers.
No injuries were reported and police are keen to speak to anyone who may have information about suspicious people or vehicles at either location.
Detective Constable Matt Chamberlain said:
“We’d like to hear from anyone who may have information relating to these two fires.
“They were in fairly close proximity and, with just a few days between each incident, may well be connected.
“However, we’re a keeping an open mind on that and any link will be assessed against the evidence once we have completed further enquiries.”
Anyone with any information is asked to report it online or call 101, quoting serial 69 of 08/01.
