A second K-pop singer has quit after admitting secretly filming himself having sex with women and sharing the videos.
Jung Joon-young, 30, said in a statement: I admit to all my crimes. I filmed women without their consent and shared it in a chatroom, and while I was doing so I didn’t feel a great sense of guilt.
Most of all, I kneel down to apologise to the women who appear in the videos and all those who might be disappointed and upset at this shocking incident.
Throughout the rest of my life, I will repent on my immoral and illegal acts that constitute crimes.
South Korean broadcaster SBS claims Jung was one of three male artists in a mobile chat room where members shared secretly-filmed footage of at least 10 women during 2015-16.
The singer, who promised to drop all his TV and music work and announced his immediate retirement, is the second K-pop star in 48 hours to quit.
Seungri, 29, a hugely successful member of boy band BIGBANG, announced his retirement on Monday after he was charged with sex bribery.
The singer, who has multiple business interests, was questioned at the weekend over accusations he offered prostitutes to potential investors at clubs in Seoul’s upmarket Gangnam district.
He is also linked to a police investigation into Burning Sun, a nightclub where he was a public relations director, where staff are alleged to have used hidden cameras to film women and used alcohol and drugs to sexually assault them.
SBS claimed Seungri was also a member of the chatroom.
The growing scandal is a shock to the South Korean music industry and the Seoul government, which actively promotes K-pop as a key cultural export, trading on the stars’ clean-cut personas.
Jung is due to be questioned by Seoul police on Thursday.
I will faithfully cooperate with an investigation by police… I will readily accept whatever punishment is in store for me, he said.
This case just shows that male K-pop stars are no exception when it comes to being part of this very disturbing reality that exploits women, women’s rights activist Bae Bok-ju said.
