It happened during an intelligence-led operation in Wheeleys Lane, in the Lee Bank area of the city just before 5am, West Midlands Police said.

Despite CPR being given, the man died at the scene. It sadly became apparent nothing could be done to save him, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

It is the second fatal shooting involving armed officers from West Midlands Police this year.

The force said in a statement: A warrant was executed as part of an intelligence-led operation in Wheeleys Lane in Lee Bank just before 5am today.

A man, in his 50s, was shot and died a short time later at the scene.

The area is currently cordoned off.
