18-year-old arrested following sexual assault on woman on footpath in Hastings

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with an attack and sexual assault on a woman on a footpath in Hastings.

The 18-year-old victim was walking along the path leading from Strood Road to Alexandra Park around 7pm on Thursday (July, 11), when she was attacked and sexually assaulted by a man.

The man then made off on foot in the direction of Asda at Silver Hill.

Officers said the victim was left shaken by the incident, and is receiving support from specially trained officers.

Following enquiries, an 18-year-old man from St Leonards was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, and was later released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Chief Inspector Sarah Godley said:

“This is a rare and isolated incident for the area and is not believed to be part of a pattern.

“However, we have increased patrols in the area and we always want people to remain aware of their surroundings when out and about.

“We also provide advice on how to keep yourself safe on our website.”
