Firefighters are to return to the scene of a fire in Tangmere after a large haystack caught alight this morning (Wednesday, 14).

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to City Fields Way shortly after 4am.

Two crews from Chichester were said to be mobilised to the scene, and upon arrival found the bales of hay well alight.

A spokesperson for the fire service said:

“A crew from East Wittering was mobilised shortly after 5am to relieve one of the Chichester crews, and remained at the scene bringing the blaze under control.

“Both crews left the scene at 8.30am.”

Firefighters from Chichester Fire Station returned to the scene just before midday to reinspect the situation.

Officials said they are due to return this afternoon to ensure no further action is required.
