Armed police close Chichester centre due to concerns for man with knife

The centre of Chichester was closed off last night (Thursday, 23) while police dealt with a man who was threatening to harm himself.

Officers said they were called to North Street at around 9.40pm to a report of concern for a man who had a knife.

Armed officers and specialist negotiators attended the scene and engaged with the man.

Police said there was no danger to the general public.

The incident was finished by 1.20am, when a 45-year-old man from Chichester was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a knife in a public place.

He was checked by health professionals and taken into custody, according to officers.
