Firefighters tackle roof fire in rural village near Haywards Heath

Firefighters have been tackling a fire at a rural property in Chelwood Gate overnight.

An investigation is taking place today (Tuesday, 28) into the cause of a fire in the roof of a large house in the East Sussex village last night.

Fire crews said they were called at around 7.15pm to Lewes Road, where eight fire engines ended up attending from from Heathfield, CrowboroughUckfield, Forest Row, and Mayfield, together with teams from West Sussex.

Officials said on arrival there was a ‘significant’ fire in the roof area, which was scaffolded and undergoing renovation and repair work.

They tackled the fire both externally and internally to salvage the property, and the owners’ possessions.

Firefighters worked overnight to dampen down the property and monitor for any flare-ups.
