Nicolas Cage is to star in a TV miniseries about the eccentric zookeeper made famous by the Tiger King documentary series.

The scripted TV series will focus on Joe Exotic, a gun-toting wild animal owner in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park.

It is based on the Texas Monthly article Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into The World Of A Man Gone Wild, by Leif Reigstad.

The eight episodes are being produced by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios, Variety reported.

Cage, 56, will also be executive producer and the script will be written by American Vandal showrunner Dan Lagana.

The TV series is the first for Oscar-winning Cage, whose film credits include Leaving Las Vegas, Moonstruck and National Treasure.

The Netflix version – Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem And Madness – was released in March and is estimated to have reached 34.3 million viewers in its first 10 days, according to Nielsen data.

Joe Exotic’s real name is Joe Schreibvogel and he is currently serving a 22-year sentence in prison for plotting the murder of animal rights activist Carole Baskin.
