Household waste recycling centres are set to re-open across Sussex after staying closed for weeks during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.
West Sussex’s tips are set to be first to return to use, on Monday May 11.
A week later, on Monday May 18, recycling sites in East Sussex and in the City of Brighton and Hove will open their gates.
All Sussex’s local authorities have emphasised that trips to the tip must only be for essential purposes, and that staff will enforce full social distancing measures.
The rules for what can, and can’t, be taken differ between authorities.
The most restrictive is West Sussex, where the county council says it’ll only accept garden waste and rubbish that can’t be recycled — though the county council said it hopes to accept other items soon.
However, recycling centres in East Sussex and in Brighton and Hove are able to take almost the full range of household waste, though East Sussex won’t receive waste for which there’s normally a charge.
All tips across Sussex will only allow visits by people using cars — so trailers, pickups, vans and any other large vehicles are banned for the time being.
The local authorities said they intend to open the recycling centres for their normal summer opening hours, but visitors should check council websites before heading out.
In all cases, tips are expected to be very busy at first, with long queues likely.
