Man charged after violent attack on two police officers in Brighton

A man has been charged following a violent assault on two police officers in Brighton on Tuesday (May, 19).

Police said two officers were called to a report of concerns for a man in the road in Madeira Drive, at around 9.15pm.

When they arrived at the scene to check on his welfare they were violently assaulted, according to police.

One officer was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment for a head injury.

Officers said a member of the public intervened and further units attended, and the suspect was safely detained.

Jonathon Clarke, 25, unemployed, of no fixed address, was charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker, and assaulting a person occasioning them actual bodily harm.

Clarke was remanded in custody to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (May, 21).
