Arrest made after Brighton residents evacuated over explosive fears

A man has been arrested after a number of people were evacuated from their homes in Brighton yesterday (Friday, 22).

Police said it followed reports of a strong smell of fuel coming from a flat in Horton Road, shortly before midday.

A number of containers of liquid, suspected to be petrol, were discovered inside.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) carried out an assessment and concluded there was no explosive threat.

Police reopened the road but remained at the scene late last night, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

A 30-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose and was taken into custody for questioning, where he remained last night.
