Launch Of New Children's Art Wellbeing Trail In Bognor Regis

Writer: Dominic KureenDominic Kureen

Young people who are members of Bognor Youth & Community Centre (BRYCC) are coming together to celebrate the opening of a new youth-led Art Trail through the streets around their Westloats Lane-base, on Saturday 29th March from 12.30  - 3.30pm.

The event will not only celebrate their amazing creativity but also showcase some of the activities possible in this vital independent community and youth space.

The Art Trail has been developed and produced through the Young Cultural Changemakers Programme run across Arun by youth arts charity Artswork.

The programme offers training and creative opportunities to cohorts of local young people who are able to commission artists and other professionals in order to realise their ideas for new projects designed to benefit their communities.

The Art Trail was developed through a range of creative workshops the young people have shared with the local artist, Tricia Johnson, who they selected to work with them, over the past six months.

It is designed to support mental health by celebrating Bognor’s individuality in all its shapes and sizes and promote well-being through encouraging active exploration of the area.

Young participants have created the art for the trail as well as planning and promoting the event, receiving training in creative leadership, communication and teamwork through the process.

The trail comprises 17 unique art pieces, created in different media and styles and  affixed to lampposts to create a trail that traverses some of the young people’s main routes around the area, as well as a series of short musical compositions and videos recorded in the BRYCC studio with local music teacher, Stuart Tranter.

The event will include a roller disco, skateboarding, bike repair shop, pool tournament, pop up arts and crafts activity and ice creams, as well as the formal launch of the Trail at 1pm.

Commissioned artist Tricia Johnson states:

"It has been an amazing experience working with all the fantastic young people who have participated in arts activities throughout this project.
"They have worked collaboratively to design this wonderful art trail and the grand opening, which has helped them find their own voices and celebrate their individual identities as young people in Bognor Regis.
"The art trail will be something they can all look back on with pride for many years to come."
