A woman from Sussex is one of three professional sailors from the South Coast taking on a race hailed as 'the toughest job in sailing'.

Ella Hebron will lead her team in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Ella is one of eleven Clipper Race Skippers who will each lead a team of non-professionals 40,000 nautical miles through the most hostile and remote stretches of the planet when it gets underway this summer.

The Clipper Race is the only event of its kind which trains people from all walks of life to become ocean racers and take on the endurance challenge of a lifetime.

Ella, from Eastbourne, completed the last edition of the biennial race as a First Mate and is stepping up to the role of Race Skipper in the Clipper 2025-26 Race.

On being selected as a Clipper Race Skipper, she said:

“Spending eleven months at sea, sailing through hurricanes, wallowing in the doldrums and dodging fishing fleets.
"All with limited fresh food, water and sleep, and a toilet mostly titled at 45 degrees. What’s not to like?
“It’s going to be an incredible and exhilarating journey; learning from each other, embedding our boat values, and, most importantly, having a blast as we bring our best performance to the yacht.
"This is going to be an experience that none of us will ever forget.”
