Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine when he joins the cast of the highly anticipated Deadpool threequel, Ryan Reynolds has revealed.

Reynolds' Deadpool first appeared on-screen in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, before getting his own film franchise in 2016.

Deadpool and Wolverine, while both Marvel characters, have never been part of the studios' wider cinematic universe (MCU), due to various licensing deals with 20th Century Studios.

However, since Disney's purchase of 20th Century Studios, rumours swirled that the characters could join their superhero colleagues such as Thor and Black Panther in the Marvel franchise.

Earlier in the year, Patrick Stewart appeared in the Doctor Strange sequel as Professor X, marking the first time an X-Men character was included in the MCU.

On Twitter, Reynolds shared a video poking fun at the production process for the third Deadpool film, before building to the big reveal with Jackman.

He said:

"We are extremely sad to have missed D23 (Disney's biennial convention) but we have been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now.

"I've had to really search my soul on this one, his first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth and motivation, new meaning.

"Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It has been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down, deep inside, and I have nothing.

"Just completely empty up here and terrifying. But we did have one idea.

"Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?"

Jackman, 53, who then appears to walk up the stairs eating food behind Reynolds, said: "Yeah, sure Ryan."

The Australian played Wolverine in eight X-Men films between 2000 and 2016, as well as his own standalone movie Logan in 2017.

He also appeared very briefly on a magazine cover in the second Deadpool film, but went on to rule out the chance of the pair teaming up in the future.

Their entry into the MCU means they could be included in future projects, such as the recently announced new Avengers films.

Elements of both characters have also been spotted in the show She-Hulk in recent weeks.

The newest instalment of Deadpool will hit cinemas in September 2024, and is directed by Shawn Levy - who worked with Reynolds on Free Guy and The Adam Project.
