1 in 14 businesses have failed COVID safety checks in a joint operation between Hastings Borough Council and the Health and Safety Executive.
The council was the first in East Sussex to sign up to the HSE scheme which started before the latest lockdown.
In total, 153 businesses were contacted during the operation, ranging from salons to warehouses, with those that failed having since been brought up to standard.
Cllr Paul Barnett, lead councillor for community safety, explained:
"There were three stages to the process. We are delighted that 93% of businesses passed, with only 7% of the businesses failing to complete the second stage, and our environmental health team have fully engaged with these businesses, who are now achieving COVID compliance.
"Following the success of this project, the council will work with the HSE in the New Year once again, engaging with registered care homes to support this valued and vital sector.
"This partnership working shows once again our determination to do all we can to support local businesses and the local community against the impact of COVID-19."
