Are councillors in part of Sussex just wasting time and public money when they have meetings?
The chairman of Mid Sussex District Council has criticised the quality of debate held during council meetings.
Colin Trumble spoke during a meeting of the full council on Wednesday (September 30) where he told members he had been ‘disappointed’ with the nature of the topics recently raised for debate and the length of time taken to discuss them.
He added:
“In my view, these meetings have not been an effective use of public time, public money and public resources.”
Three items were tabled for discussion that evening — the government’s planning reforms, modern slavery, and the treatment of refugees.
While Mr Trumble urged councillors to ‘reflect’ on whether some of those were a good use of time and money, all three debates were held and all three were carried.
