Burglar who drove at 100mph on wrong side of the road in Sussex is jailed

A burglar has been jailed for two years after driving at 100mph on the wrong side of the road, before assaulting a Sussex Police officer when he was arrested. James Hutton, 30, a scaffolder, of no fixed address, was caught speeding between Bexhill and Eastbourne last year, a few months before he burgled a home in Eastbourne. Hutton was driving along the A259 Marsh Road from Bexhill to Eastbourne in August, when he drew the attention of police travelling in a car behind him. Officers said he was observed weaving in the road, travelling over into the opposing carriageway and narrowly missing oncoming vehicles as he approached the Pevensey Roundabout. Hutton was followed onto the A27 Pevensey Bypass, where his dangerous driving continued, as he drifted over into the opposing carriageway at speeds of 50mph. When police signalled for him to pull over, he sped up, and reached speeds of 100mph while moving over to the wrong side of the road. He was finally stopped after officers managed to deflate one of his tyres at the Little Horsted roundabout, and he was arrested after exiting his vehicle. Police said while he was being transported to custody, he headbutted a police officer. On November 6, Hutton broke into a home in Freeman Avenue, Eastbourne, and stole a bottle of rum, cash, foreign currency and a cheque book. He was caught after a neighbour heard a noise and contacted police. Hutton later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker and failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He was sentenced to six months in prison for dangerous driving, four months for assaulting an emergency worker, and four weeks for failing to provide a specimen for analysis, which are all running concurrently. He was jailed for two years for the burglary, which are running concurrently with his other sentences. He was also given a two-year driving ban.
