The number of coronavirus cases in Sussex has significantly increased as 'second pillar' cases have been included in Government figures for the first time.
From today, the data now reveals the number of test results from swabs taken at drive-through centres and home testing kits processed in commercial labs — known as ‘pillar 2’ data.
Previously, Public Health England’s dashboard only provided 'Pillar 1' data - the number of cases from tests done in hospitals and laboratories.
It is important to note that the new number of recorded cases do not necessarily reflect the number of active cases, rather the accumulated total of coronavirus cases since the outbreak began.
The case numbers for areas in Sussex as of 6am on Wednesday were:
- West Sussex: 1,380
- East Sussex: 785
- Brighton and Hove: 490
- Total: 2,655
The new case numbers, now including second pillar testing, show a marked increase:
- West Sussex: 2,679
- East Sussex: 1,476
- Brighton and Hove: 764
- Total: 4,919
