West of Brighton Palace Pier, the city's beach has been closed for a time this afternoon (Sunday April 18) after a piece of possible unexploded ordnance was found.

Police said shortly before 3pm that they'd cordoned off the area in response to a report that an item, which could be an unexploded mortar shell, had been discovered.

Officers said the scene has been made safe while attendance from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal was awaited.

A statement from Sussex Police said that, in the interests of safety, members of the public are advised to stay away from the area in the meantime.
