The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed they will not be returning as working members of the Royal Family.
Additionally, Buckingham Palace said today (February 19) that Harry and Meghan would be relinquishing several appointments and patronages, after talks between Her Majesty The Queen, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.
The Palace said the Queen herself had written about their change in status.
"Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service."
In a statement, Buckingham Palace set in context The Queen's decision, in the light of recent announcements by Harry and Meghan.
It said:
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family. "
The Palace then stated exactly which appointments and patronages would be released, and how:
"The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family."
The appointments and patronages are:
- Captain General, The Royal Marines,
- Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington,
- Commodore In Chief, Royal Navy Small Ships and Diving,
- Patron, The Queen's Commonwealth Trust,
- Patron, The Rugby Football Union,
- Patron, The Rugby Football League,
- Patron, The Royal National Theatre, and
- Patron, The Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Buckingham Palace concluded:
"While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family."
This decision follows a 12-month review of Harry and Meghan's roles within the Royal Family.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess said:
"As evidenced by their work over the past year, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role."
