Source: HM Coastguard Shoreham Facebook

Officials from HM Coastguard Shoreham said their team were joined by Newhaven Coastguard, Shoreham RNLI, Sussex Police, SECAmb and local lifeguards to rescue a swimmer in water off Brighton yesterday (Sunday).

The Coastguard said it's after a person entered the water towards Brighton Pier and was swept along towards Black Rock.

According the met office, Brighton saw windgusts of up to 40mph yesterday.

Several members of the public, as well as police officers reportedly tried to rescue the individual, before lifeguards from Brighton Beach office managed to remove the casualty from the water.

They were then moved from the beach on a stretcher and into the care of SECAmb paramedics.

The team said:

"Today this person was very lucky to escape the sea.

"Don’t put yourself or others in danger.

"When the sea is rough STAY OUT OF THE WATER.

"The waves can easily drag an adult out to sea which has the potential for catastrophic results.

"Large waves, tides and currents all pose a threat to life.

"If you see anyone in trouble in the sea or along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguards"
