Four Sussex Police Officers Due To Face Misconduct Hearings Today

Sussex Police

In two separate cases, a total of four Sussex Police officers have misconduct hearings against them beginning today.

One is a deferred hearing, looking into allegations against Sergeant Andrew Hother, based at Worthing.

He faces these allegations under the Police Conduct Regulations 2012:

  1. Between January 2019 and January 2020 behaved in a bullying manner towards colleagues;
  2. Between January 2019 and January 2020 made racist remarks to colleagues and/or in the presence of members of the public; and
  3. On frequent occasions was seen vaping inside police vehicles or at public locations whilst in uniform.

Sussex Police said that, if proved, these allegations are so serious as to amount to gross misconduct.

In a separate hearing, three officers face linked allegations involving a case whose witnesses' names are being withheld.

An officer who is not being named by police, known to the hearing as "PC X", is accused of the following:

PC X attended the home of Mrs B following an allegation of assault made by Ms A against Mrs B and:

  1. PC X spoke to Ms A in a manner designed to influence her not to progress the allegation of assault against Mrs B
  2. She spoke to Ms A before the officers investigating the matter, PC Felgate and PC Price, had the opportunity
  3. PC X gave PC Felgate and PC Price a misleading account of the account of Ms A and other evidence
  4. PC X spoke in a rude and dismissive manner to Mrs C

PC Russell Felgate and PC Alice Price are accused of the following allegations:

  1. Failed to appropriately and sufficiently investigate the allegation of assault by Ms A or to properly administer the matter
  2. Failed to challenge PC X’s involvement in the matter

Additional, it is alleged that PC Felgate told Mrs. B where Ms A was staying.

Sussex Police said that, if proved, these allegations are so serious as to amount to gross misconduct.

According to the Police Ombudsman, the outcomes after a misconduct hearing can include the alleged misconduct not being found, or the following:

  • No further action
  • Management advice
  • Written warning
  • Final written warning
  • Extension of final written warning
  • Reduction in rank
  • Dismissal with notice
  • Dismissal without notice
