A man who committed a violent and unprovoked attack against a cashpoint user, leaving him needing specialist treatment for head and face injuries, has been jailed for a year-and-a-half.
Around 11pm on June 1 2018, a man and woman were withdrawing money from a cash point in Brighton's Whitehawk Road when they were approached by a man now known as Dominic Killen.
Police said that, without warning, Killen punched the 44-year-old victim, causing him to fall to the floor and hit his head.
He was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital, before being transferred to Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, where he received specialist treatment for head and facial injuries.
After seeing his facial image circulated on social media, Killen, a 39-year-old chef, of Whitehawk Way, Brighton, handed himself in.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm.
He denied the offence and the case was due to go to trial.
However, he later changed his plea to guilty, and at Lewes Crown Court on Monday 29 June, he was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
Investigating officer, Police Constable Russell Smith, said:
“This was a mindless attack on an innocent man, resulting in serious injuries which required reconstruction.
“Not only does he have to live with these injuries; he also had to endure more than two years before seeing justice served, as the defendant initially refused to claim responsibility for his actions.
“The sentence handed to Killen demonstrates our commitment to catching criminals, and to keeping victims of crime safe and feeling safe.”
