It happened near The Grand Hotel in Grand Parade at around 3.15pm yesterday.
The 38-year-old victim was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition while a 44-year-old was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.
Detective Constable Dione Powell said:
"We are treating this as an isolated incident between two people known to each other.
"We want to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident or the circumstances surrounding it.
"It happened in the middle of the afternoon on the seafront and there were members of the public in the area.”
