A man has been charged with the murder of Sergeant Matt Ratana, the Metropolitan Police officer from Sussex, shot dead at Croydon custody centre last September.
Louis de Zoysa, 23, of Park Road, Banstead, Surrey, has also been charged with possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition, the Metropolitan Police said.
Mr Ratana, 54, died from his injuries in the early hours of 25 September last year.
The custody sergeant was also the head coach at East Grinstead Rugby Club in West Sussex.
Since the incident, de Zoysa has remained in hospital in a stable, non-life threatening condition and under police guard.
Scotland Yard said that recent changes to his condition led the Crown Prosecution Service to feel comfortable in charging him in connection with the incident.
De Zoysa will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (June 30) via video link.
Mr Ratana's partner and son have been informed.
