A total of £3,150,149 is coming from Arts Council England to groups and individuals in Sussex, who've applied for assistance as the pandemic causes income streams to shrink.
The grants, which were requested by the people and organisations concerned, cover many types of arts practiced in Sussex, including theatre, visual arts, dance, museums, literature, music and combinations of many forms.
Recipients range from individual practitioners — some of whom received sums down to £250 — up to Sussex's major museums and art galleries including Worthing Theatres and Museum (£29,209) the Hastings Storytelling Festival (£34,044), and the Artists Open Houses project in Brighton (£33,270).
The grants were part of a national scheme, the Arts Council Emergency Response Package funded by the National Lottery and the Government.
The chief executive of Arts Council England, Darren Hanley, said:
"The Arts Council has never awarded so many grants, in such a short space of time, to so many creative people.
"None of this would have been possible without National Lottery players – it’s thanks to them that our artists, arts organisations, museums and libraries are able to continue to benefit the lives of communities across England.”
The chair of Arts Council England pointed out that struggling individuals were just as likely to benefit from grant applications as large organisations.
Sir Nicholas Serota said:
“This urgent financial support has provided a lifeline to the many creative individuals and organisations across England that make up our vibrant cultural sector, for whom Covid-19 has dealt a devastating blow.
"We thank our Secretary of State, Oliver Dowden; Minister for Culture, Caroline Dinenage; and officials at DCMS, for their continued support as we work together to protect and sustain a cultural sector that can be a catalyst for national renewal, as we emerge from this crisis.”
In total across all England, £50 million of the emergency response package was available to support organisations outside of the Arts Council’s National Portfolio, with £47.7 million awarded to 2,182 organisations across the country.
The Arts Council added that over £5.9 million has been invested to support 245 disability-led organisations across the country, with £9.3 million awarded to 395 Black and minority ethnic-led organisations.
