The new minimum £5 charge to drop passengers at Gatwick comes into effect this morning.
But, speaking to More Radio, a spokesperson for motoring organisation the RAC called the airport's fee a "bit of a rip-off" when it was announced.
From this morning, 8 March, a minimum £5 charge applies to the drop off zone, which must be paid online by midnight the day after a visit.
But the long stay car park allows free drop-offs with waiting for up to two hours.
The new, chargeable drop off zones are located directly outside the airport terminals, which the airport described as "the most convenient place for dropping off passengers quickly and easily".
Gatwick's management also recommended not using the drop-off zones for picking up passengers, given that this sometimes takes longer if flights are delayed or customs and immigration sections are busy.
All flights are currently operating to and from the airport's North Terminal
The charging scale is:
- £5 for 10 minutes
- £1 for each additional minute up to 20 minutes.
- Maximum charge of £25
- Maximum length of stay 30 mins.
Payment must be made by midnight the day after the visit to drop off passengers at the forecourt.
Gatwick officials added that non-payment will be enforced through automatic number plate cameras, and Parking Charge Notices at a charge of £100, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
