The British Transport Police has confirmed that a person has died after being struck by a train in the early hours of this morning.
A rail replacement service was in place between Eastbourne and Ashford International after trains were suspended to allow emergency crews to work.
Sadly, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said:
"British Transport Police were called at 5.06am to Norman’s Bay station following a report of a casualty on the tracks.
"Officers attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."
In a statement on operator Southern Railway's website, it said:
"Emergency services have completed their work between Eastbourne and Ashford International following the tragic incident this morning. It is now safe to run trains between Eastbourne and Hastings. A lot of trains and train crew are out of place as a result of this disruption, Southern are now working to get everything back on time as quickly and safely as possible."
It's expected that trains may begin to run a normal service again at approximately 12pm.
