A former ambulance station in Bexhill could be set to become an artist and blacksmiths studio.
In an application to Rother District Council, proposals have been put forward to convert the former ambulance station in Beeching Road into studio space for artists and local blacksmith Ben Wood.
No internal or external changes are proposed to the buildings, bar the insertion of a small flue.
In a planning statement submitted as part of the application, a spokesman for the developer said:
“The application seeks to create a hub for creative uses, consistent with the core strategy objectives of strengthening Bexhill’s cultural heritage, promoting economic growth especially in high value added sectors and focussing new opportunities for business growth close to the town centre.
“The use would be anchored initially by an artisan blacksmith, Ben Wood, who makes artwork for himself and for other sculptors.”
It adds:
“The proposal secures employment on this redundant site and supports the arts and cultural sector that is actively promoted within the town by local policies.
“It would deliver significant benefits for the wider community, as well as the immediate community via interaction with the day centre.
“The proposal has been shown to be compliant with relevant planning policy. The proposal squarely meets the tests of sustainable development and accordingly the presumption in favour should prevail.
For further information on the proposals see application reference RR/2021/1464/P on the Rother District Council website.
