Sussex Zoo Animals Bring Covers to Life For World Book Day

Zookeepers in Sussex have dug out their favourite books this week, to carry out a fun photoshoot with animal residents - as part of the lead up to National Book Day today (Thursday).

The ‘bookface’ challenge sees people taking photos where a book cover appears to be part of a person's face or body, but keepers at Drusillas Park took the trend to a new level, by trying the challenge with their animals – with novel results!

Capybaras, monkeys, penguins, flamingos, and armadillos were among the animals to star in the photos, with Head Keeper, Gemma Romanis, commenting:

“Getting these photos was a game of considerable patience! We just had to hold the book up and wait (and hope) that someone walked into the right position – so we did get some funny looks from visitors!”

Celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2025, Drusillas hopes that seeing some of the zoo’s most popular animals with books will encourage children to grab a book and dive into the pages of a new story.

In the 1960s, Drusillas was one of the first zoos to integrate education into their visitor experience, with the backing of Sussex County Council.

With the help of two local teachers, Drusillas developed an engaging zoo experience that combined education and entertainment under the motto "fun finding out".

Today, education remains a core feature of the Drusillas experience, welcoming thousands of local school children each year.

Drusillas’ Head of Education, James Woodward, said:

“Reading is a great way to stimulate a child’s imagination! There are so many wonderful books out there, and hundreds of books about animals.

"They are a really useful learning tool because they teach children about the animals of the world in an exciting and engaging way.

"Not all learning has to be sitting in a classroom, some of the best learning comes from getting lost in the magic of a good book.”
