West Sussex Mind is marking World Mental Health Day (Saturday 10) by highlighting a predicted rise in demand for their services this year.
Due to the impact of Covid-19, 13,000* more people are expected to have mental health problems in West Sussex alone.
Jackie from Worthing has had an eating disorder for nearly 40 years, she said it's been 'more on than off, unfortunately'.
It's impacted her life hugely, kept her isolated and anxious.
Shame and guilt used to stop her form getting involved in activities and getting help.
Mind have offered Jackie phone calls, one-to-one sessions, group sessions and social activities such as art classes.
Jackie said the atmosphere and support enabled her to attend the sessions without fear or anxiety.
She's also completed courses in mindfulness and mentoring.
Jackie said:
"They have been amazing, they have really changed my life.
"In fact they've probably, and it's not an understatement to say, they've probably saved my life.
"I was at a very low point when I first went to them and they have been so encouraging and supportive.
"I have never felt judged and they have helped me build my confidence."
Anyone who is struggling and wondering whether they should reach out for support is strongly encouraged to do so.
Jackie added:
"I was one of those people for a long time, my advice would be please just pick up the phone.
"You're always assured of a really friendly and supportive welcome.
"Don't leave it like I did for years and years, everybody is worthy of support, everybody deserves support, and do not feel ashamed or embarrassed.
"Just pick up the phone, and don't think any problem is too small or that you're not worthy, because you are."
To continue offering these services, West Sussex Mind urgently needs donations.
Fundraising was almost brought to a stop due to the pandemic.
Chief executive Katie Glover said:
“We urgently need your help. If you are able, please make a donation so we can continue our important work.
"Thank you.”
